Heyo!
so today can be summed up in one word: unplanned. Almost everything did not go according to schedule and this created a little bit of confusion between the different units. so what happened was there was one planned operation today, that went great, but after that things went off the plan. the first cath case, that was going to be a simple in and out repair, turned out to take the entire day and an open heart surgery at the end. what happened was the device used in the cath migrated from where it was supposed to be into another place and the cath lab was unable to fish it out. the patient was then taken up to the OR so they could get it out. from what I heard, the procedure was successful, though frustrating, and the child was in the process of waking up from the anesthesia when we left at about 9 o'clock. this complication caused for the cath lab schedule to change from 5-7 planned procedures to 3, though thankfully the ones that were cancelled were cases that could wait until next year and still be ok.
on a bit of the brighter side, I got to experience something today that not many kids my age get to see: an open heart surgery. I did not see all of the procedure, due to 2 things; 1. I got there a bit late, and 2. because I was not in full scrubs and gloves, I could not get too close to the patient. however, I did get to see the heart start to beat again after being on bypass for the operation. it was a very cool experience, though it did make me a bit queasy.
I also learned today a magical cure for a bad case of the grumpies: bubbles! for many of the younger patients, blowing bubbles with them will make them smile and you might even get an adorable giggle from them.
that's all for now, and it's time for bed. Good night!
